Singapore International Jewelry Expo (SIJE) 2021 will take place at Bay Sands Singapore Expo & Convention Centre in Hong Kong from December 2 to 5, 2022. On display will be a USD 1.99 million ring -16.08 carat round brilliant cut diamond, type IIA internally flawless and colourless, GIA-certified. Preview of a breathtaking SGD 250,000 necklace designed by a renowned local jewelry designer at SIJE 2021 will also be shown.
Will there be a market for these at SIJE 2021 after a long and difficult pause of 2 years?
A market research finding by Euromonitor International in May 20211 indicated that the jewelry sector was one of the worst-affected markets in terms of retails sales in 2020 in Asia Pacific when the pandemic hit. Imposed measures to contain the spread of the pandemic such as retail closures and lockdowns had hit sales directly. Retail shutdowns adversely affected sales as consumers preferred to see and try on fine jewellery in store before buying it.
According to a statement by the Singapore Jewellers Association (SJA) in May 20212, consumers in Singapore were less willing to shop under the tight COVID-19 measure which were imposed when the pandemic broke out. Spending became more restricted when the Heightened Alert phase came into effect in May 2021.
With the return of SIJE 2021 on 2 December, jewelers at the much-anticipated and most established jewelry show in Singapore and the region, are confident that the market is ready to rebound as in the past eight months, sales for investment pieces and gemstones in general have picked up. And with Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year, round the corner, this momentum is set to vastly improve as the market gets ready to greet the endemic stage.
The glittery 4-day show will be a visual feast for buyers and jewelry enthusiasts over a splendid collection of gemstones and jewels in excess of SGD100 million across more than 100 brands. This year, Indonesia, the show’s country partner, will showcase its gemstones and designs from across the archipelago under a dedicated pavilion. Singapore’s finest jewellers along with purveyors of fine gemstones and precious pieces from around the world will also be showing their finest collections in their respective pavilions at the show.
The event will be opened by Guest of Honour Low Yen Ling, Minister of State, Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth & Ministry of Trade and Industry; Chairperson of Mayors’ Committee & Mayor, South West District.
